A2 · Subordinate clauses
…, dass er kommen kann.
two verb parts in a subordinate clause: finite verb last
Form…, dass … Infinitiv / Partizip + konjugiertes Verb (Ende)
Meaning and usage
In a subordinate clause with dass, weil, wenn or obwohl, the conjugated verb usually goes to the end. When the clause has two verb parts, the infinitive or participle comes first and the conjugated verb follows it: Ich weiß, dass er gestern gekommen ist., Er sagt, dass er nicht kommen kann. So the order inside the bracket is the opposite of the main clause: Er kann nicht kommen becomes dass er nicht kommen kann.
One exception comes later: a modal verb in the perfect puts the conjugated verb before the two infinitives, as in dass er hat kommen können. The pattern to master now is infinitive or participle first, conjugated verb last. The common mistake is keeping the main-clause order and writing dass er kann nicht kommen.

Er sagt, dass er morgen nicht .
Show answer
Correct answer: kommen kann
With two verb parts the conjugated verb kann goes after the infinitive kommen, and morgen rules out a past form.
- gekommen kann A participle cannot combine with a modal verb this way; the perfect of modal verbs uses a double infinitive.
- kommen konnte morgen is in the future, so the past form konnte does not fit.
- kann kommen This keeps the main clause order; in a dass clause the conjugated verb must move to the end.
