Formeins (allein) | ein / eine / einen + Nomen | ein- + Zahlwort | um eins (Uhrzeit)
Meaning and usage
German has several forms for the number one. Counting on its own, or standing in for a noun, it is eins: eins, zwei, drei, or Ich habe nur eins. Before a noun it behaves like the article: ein Buch, eine Frau, einen Apfel. Inside a compound number it is ein-: einundzwanzig. On the clock you say ein Uhr (one o'clock) but um eins (at one).
The usual mistake is using the article form with no noun after it: Ich habe nur ein instead of Ich habe nur eins. On the clock both um ein Uhr and um eins are correct; only um eins Uhr is wrong. Remember: with a noun, use the article form; without a noun, use eins.

Show answer
Correct answer: eins
No noun follows, so the number stands on its own. It stands for ein Kind, which is neuter, so the form is eins.
- einen is masculine accusative, but Kind is neuter.
- ein needs a noun after it: Ich habe nur ein Kind.
- eine is feminine, but Kind is neuter.
