A2 · der-words and ein-words

mit meinem Bruder, mit einer Freundin

ein-words in the dative: meinem, einer

FormPräposition + Possessiv/Ein-Wort im Dativ: meinem/einem (m, n), meiner/einer (f)

Meaning and usage

After prepositions like mit, von, nach, bei and seit, German uses the dative case. Ein-words take the ending -em for masculine and neuter nouns: mit meinem Bruder, mit einem Kind. For feminine nouns the ending is -er: mit meiner Schwester, von einer Freundin. The same endings apply to kein and to all possessives like dein, sein and ihr.

The noun itself usually stays unchanged in the dative singular; only plural nouns add -n, as in mit meinen Freunden. The common mistake is mixing up the endings, for example mit meiner Bruder or mit einem Freundin. The -er here marks the feminine dative, as der does in mit der Schwester.

    Correct answer: mit meiner

After mit the dative is needed, and Schwester is feminine, so the ending is -er: mit meiner Schwester.

    • mit meinem This ending is for masculine and neuter nouns in the dative, but Schwester is feminine.
    • mit meinen meinen is the dative plural, as in mit meinen Schwestern, but Schwester is singular here.
    • mit meineren This form does not exist in standard German.
