A2 · Two-way prepositions

legen / liegen

legen lays something down, liegen means to be lying

Formlegen + Akkusativobjekt + wohin? (Akkusativ) / liegen (Subjekt) + wo? (Dativ)

Meaning and usage

legen is a verb with an object: someone puts something down somewhere, so the phrase answers wohin? and the place takes the accusative: Ich lege die Zeitung auf den Tisch. liegen has no object: something is lying somewhere, so the phrase answers wo? and the place takes the dative: Die Zeitung liegt auf dem Tisch. The same pair exists as stellen and stehen and setzen and sitzen.

The usual mistake is mixing up the two verbs or the cases, for example Ich liege die Zeitung auf den Boden, which is ungrammatical because liegen cannot take an object like die Zeitung in this local sense. Ask yourself first: is there a thing being put down? Then use legen with the accusative. Is the thing already in the place? Then use liegen with the dative.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: legte

There is an object, das Buch, and the phrase answers wohin?, so you need legen in the past tense, legte.

    • liegen is the infinitive and does not fit after the subject ich in a past-tense sentence.
    • lag is the past tense of liegen, which cannot take the object das Buch in this local sense.
    • liegt is present tense and intransitive, so it cannot take the object das Buch.
