A2 · würde, hätte, wäre

Wir könnten …

könnte for suggestions and possibilities

Formkönnte / könntest / könnten (Position 2) … Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

Könnte is the Konjunktiv II form of können. In a statement it makes something sound possible or tentative: a suggestion, a guess or a mild warning. Wir könnten ins Kino gehen proposes going to the cinema, and Es könnte regnen says rain is possible. The conjugation is ich könnte, du könntest, er/sie/es könnte, wir/sie könnten, ihr könntet. The infinitive usually goes to the end of the sentence.

Use this in statements, not in questions; polite questions like Könnten Sie mir helfen? are taught separately. Wir können ins Kino gehen is also a normal suggestion, but it sounds more direct than könnten. A common learner error is word order: Wir könnten gehen ins Kino instead of Wir könnten ins Kino gehen, with the infinitive at the end.

    Correct answer: könnten

The subject is wir, and the sentence makes a tentative suggestion, so könnten fits.

    • würdest is second person singular and does not match wir.
    • hätten would need a noun or participle here and does not fit before an infinitive in this pattern.
    • kannst is second person singular and does not match wir.
