A2 · Prepositions with a fixed case

durch, für, gegen, ohne, um + Akkusativ

durch, für, gegen, ohne, um + accusative

FormPräposition (durch, für, gegen, ohne, um) + Akkusativ

Meaning and usage

These five prepositions always take the accusative case. You see the accusative on masculine articles and pronouns: für den Mann, ohne einen Plan, gegen ihn, durch mich, um dich. Feminine, neuter and plural forms usually look the same as the nominative, so the masculine and pronoun forms are your best clue.

Learners often use the dative after these prepositions, especially with mit or bei in mind. That produces ungrammatical phrases like für dem Mann or ohne mir. The case belongs to the preposition itself, so you learn each preposition together with its case.

    Correct answer: dich

für always takes the accusative, and the accusative form of du is dich. The other options are dative, possessive or genitive forms and cannot follow für.

    • Dein is a possessive article, not a pronoun that can stand alone after für.
    • Dir is the dative pronoun, and für does not take the dative.
    • Deiner is a genitive or dative feminine form, which does not fit here.
