A2 · Subordinate clauses

…, weil ich früh aufstehe.

separable verb joins as one word at the end

Formweil … Subjekt … Verb+Präfix (ein Wort, Ende)

Meaning and usage

In a main clause a separable verb splits: the stem takes position 2 and the prefix goes to the end, as in Ich stehe früh auf. In a subordinate clause with weil, dass or wenn, the whole verb moves to the end of that clause, and stem and prefix are written as one word: weil ich früh aufstehe.

The usual mistake is keeping the main clause pattern inside the subordinate clause and writing weil ich früh stehe auf or weil ich auf stehe. In a clause after a subordinating conjunction, the separable verb must be one word at the very end. Note that the prefix is attached directly, with no space: aufstehe, not auf stehe.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: aufsteht

After weil the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause, and a separable verb is written as one word there: aufsteht.

    • steht auf This is the main clause order, which does not work after weil.
    • auf steht This splits the verb and puts the prefix first, which is not possible in a subordinate clause.
    • stehtauf This glues two words together that are not a real German word.
