Meaning and usage
Ich hätte gern … is the standard polite way to say I'd like when ordering in a café or restaurant or asking for something in a shop. It uses hätte, the Konjunktiv II form of haben, followed by gern or gerne and a noun in the accusative: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. The Konjunktiv II makes the request softer and more polite than the plain present tense Ich habe gern, which does not work here.
The same form appears in questions: Hätten Sie Lust auf einen Kaffee? and Hättest du Lust mitzukommen? mean Would you like …? and make a friendly invitation. A common learner mistake is using the present tense instead: Ich habe gern einen Kaffee means I like having a coffee, not I'd like a coffee.
