A2 · Preterite

machte, wohnte: Stamm + -te

weak verbs form the preterite with -te

FormStamm + -te + Endung (ich machte, du machtest, er machte, wir machten)

Meaning and usage

Weak (regular) verbs build the preterite by adding -te to the stem: machen gives ich machte, du machtest, er machte, wir machten, ihr machtet, sie machten. The first and third person singular are identical: ich machte and er machte have no extra ending after -te. Only du adds -st and ihr adds -t: du machtest, ihr machtet.

Use this form for past events in stories, letters and reports, and for repeated or ongoing past situations like Früher spielte ich im Park. In spoken German, weak verbs usually appear in the perfect instead (ich habe gemacht), but the preterite is correct everywhere. A common mistake is adding a personal ending in the third person singular: er machtet instead of er machte.

    Correct answer: spielte

The subject is er, so the weak verb spielen takes the preterite form spielte, with no ending after -te.

    • spielen This is the present plural or infinitive form and does not match the subject er.
    • spielten This form belongs to wir or sie (plural), but the subject here is er.
    • spielt This is the present tense for er, but gestern points to the past.
