Formfahren (a) → fuhr (u) → gefahren (a): Stammvokal a → u, Partizip wie Infinitiv
Meaning and usage
Some strong verbs with the stem vowel a change it to u in the simple past (Präteritum) and take the vowel a again in the past participle. The group includes fahren, fuhr, gefahren, tragen, trug, getragen, schlagen, schlug, geschlagen, waschen, wusch, gewaschen, einladen, lud ein, eingeladen and wachsen, wuchs, gewachsen. Notice that the participle keeps the vowel of the infinitive: gefahren, not gefuhren.
In everyday speech you mostly meet these verbs in the perfect with sein or haben: Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren, Er hat mich eingeladen. The Präteritum forms fuhr, trug, schlug appear mostly in written stories. A common mistake is taking the preterite vowel into the participle, as in ich bin gefuhren, or using the wrong auxiliary: Ich habe nach Berlin gefahren instead of Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren.

Show answer
Correct answer: fuhren
The time expression and the missing finite verb in position 2 call for the Präteritum of fahren: wir fuhren.
- gefahren is a past participle and cannot stand alone as the finite verb in position 2.
- fahren is the infinitive and does not match the past time expression letzten Sommer.
- fuhrt is the form for ihr, not for wir.
