A2 · der-words and ein-words

alle Kinder, mit allen Kindern

all: alle follows the der-word pattern

Formalle + Pluralnomen (Nominativ/Akkusativ), mit allen + Nomen (Dativ)

Meaning and usage

alle means all and is used with plural nouns. It follows the der-word pattern, the same endings you know from diese: alle Kinder, alle Fragen, alle Fenster. In the dative it takes -en, like diesen: mit allen Kindern, unter allen Umständen. An adjective after alle usually ends in -en in the nominative and accusative: alle guten Freunde.

A common mistake is dropping the dative ending: mit alle Kindern instead of mit allen Kindern. With a plural noun, alle copies the der-word endings: alle, allen, aller.

    Correct answer: alle

Fragen is the direct object in the accusative plural, so alle takes the der-word plural ending -e: alle Fragen.

    • aller is a genitive or dative form and does not fit before a plural accusative noun.
    • allen is the dative plural form, which you would need after a dative preposition like mit, not here.
    • allem is dative singular and cannot go with the plural Fragen.
