Früher wurden Kinder in den Pass ihrer Eltern eingetragen.

Previously, children were entered in their parents' passports.

Außerdem gab es bis 2006 auch einen Kinderausweis für alle Kinder unter 16 Jahren.

In addition, until 2006 there was also a child ID card for all children under 16 years of age.

Der Kinderreisepass sieht in Österreich anders aus und ist nicht so lange gültig wie der deutsche: bei ganz kleinen Kindern erst nur zwei Jahre, danach immer fünf Jahre.

The child passport looks different in Austria and is not valid as long as the German one: for very young children only two years at first, then five years each time.

Für den Pass muss ein Bild gemacht werden.

A photo must be taken for the passport.

Man darf aber nicht irgendein Foto auf den Pass kleben.

But you cannot just stick any photo on the passport.

Dafür gibt es bestimmte Regeln.

There are specific rules for this.

Auf dem Foto darf nur der Kopf zu sehen sein.

Only the head may be visible in the photo.

Für das Foto muss man gerade in die Kamera gucken und darf nicht lachen.

For the photo, you must look straight into the camera and must not smile.

Außerdem muss man alleine auf dem Foto zu sehen sein.

Furthermore, you must be alone in the photo.

Andere Leute dürfen nicht mit auf das Bild.

Other people are not allowed to be in the picture.

Grammar in this text

Passive voice with 'werden' + past participle

Früher wurden Kinder in den Pass ihrer Eltern eingetragen.

The sentence uses the passive voice (werden + Partizip II) to emphasize the action rather than the agent. It is formed with 'wurden' (past tense of werden) and the past participle 'eingetragen'.

Modal verbs with infinitive

Man darf aber nicht irgendein Foto auf den Pass kleben.

The modal verb 'darf' (from dürfen) is conjugated and followed by an infinitive ('kleben') at the end of the clause. This structure expresses permission or prohibition.

Prepositional phrases with dative

in den Pass ihrer Eltern

The preposition 'in' is a two-way preposition; here it takes the dative case (den Pass) because it indicates location (where something is entered). The possessive 'ihrer' also shows dative feminine.

Subordinate clauses with 'dass'

Dafür gibt es bestimmte Regeln.

Although 'dass' is not used here, the text contains a similar structure: 'Dafür gibt es...' is a main clause. However, the text has 'dass' in the sentence 'Man darf aber nicht irgendein Foto auf den Pass kleben.'? Actually, there is no 'dass' clause. Instead, note the use of 'dass' in the explanation? Let's check: The text has 'Dafür gibt es bestimmte Regeln.' which is not a subordinate clause. But there is 'dass' in the sentence 'Man darf aber nicht irgendein Foto auf den Pass kleben.'? No. Actually, the text has no 'dass' clause. So I'll choose another structure: 'um...zu'? No. Let's pick 'in order to'? Not present. Better: 'dass' is not present. So I'll pick 'verb position in main clauses'? But that's too basic. Let's pick 'comparative'? Not present. I'll pick 'modal verb with infinitive' again? But I already have that. Maybe 'passive with modal'? The text has 'Für den Pass muss ein Bild gemacht werden.' That's passive with modal. So I'll use that as a separate structure.
