indem is the one to master

It answers how, and there is no neat English conjunction for it: English uses by plus a gerund, which German cannot do. Every time you want to write by doing X, the German is indem plus a full clause.

Where it goes wrong

Man verbessert sein Deutsch bei lesen.

Man verbessert sein Deutsch, indem man liest.

German has no gerund, so by reading cannot be rendered with a preposition plus a verb form. Either use indem plus a clause, or nominalise properly: durch Lesen.

wobei: the qualifier

Extremely common in careful spoken and written German, and it has no single English equivalent. It attaches a qualification to what was just said: though, whereby, with the proviso that. It is the polite way to disagree with half of something.

sodass and so … dass

Written as one word, sodass introduces a plain result. Split, with an adjective or adverb between, it intensifies: so … dass means so X that.

Common questions

How do I say 'by doing something' in German?

With indem plus a full clause: 'Man lernt Deutsch, indem man liest.' German has no gerund, so the English -ing construction has no direct equivalent. The alternative is a nominalisation with durch: 'durch Lesen'.

What does 'wobei' mean?

It attaches a qualification to what was just said: roughly 'though' or 'with the proviso that'. 'Der Plan ist gut, wobei die Kosten unklar sind.' It is very common in careful speech and is the standard way of half-agreeing.

Is it 'sodass' or 'so dass'?

sodass as one word introduces a result: 'Es regnete, sodass wir blieben.' The split form belongs to the so … dass construction, where so modifies an adjective: 'Es regnete so stark, dass wir blieben.' Both spellings are permitted for the first, but one word is now standard.
