…, geschweige denn …

geschweige denn: let alone, much less

Formverneinter Satz, geschweige denn + Ergänzung

Meaning and usage

geschweige denn means let alone, much less. It follows a negative statement and adds something even less likely: Ich kann Französisch nicht lesen, geschweige denn sprechen. Das Baby kann nicht laufen, geschweige denn rennen.

The first part has to be negative or nearly so, with nicht, kein or kaum: Er hat kaum Zeit zum Schlafen, geschweige denn für Urlaub. What follows is usually a short addition, not a full clause, and it has the same shape as the part it is compared with. In modern German denn is nearly always there.

    Correct answer: geschweige denn

No time even for a coffee, so certainly none for a long meal: geschweige denn = let alone.

    • außerdem adds a further point and cannot link these two phrases.
    • sondern auch needs nicht nur before it.
    • und auch would need nicht to keep the second part negative.
