der: -ling, -ismus, -ist, -or

masculine endings: -ling, -ismus, -ist, -or

Formder + Nomen auf -ling, -ismus, -ist, -or

Meaning and usage

Four endings mark a noun as masculine. -ling: der Feigling, der Säugling, der Lehrling. -ismus: der Tourismus, der Optimismus. -ist: der Polizist, der Journalist. -or, for people and machines: der Direktor, der Autor, der Motor.

People in -ist and -or form the feminine with -in: die Polizistin, die Autorin. The -ist nouns are weak, so they add -en outside the nominative singular: Ich frage den Polizisten. Watch the few neuter -or words: das Labor, das Tor.

    Correct answer: ein

Optimist ends in -ist, so it is masculine, and after ist it stays in the nominative: ein Optimist.

    • eine is feminine; the feminine would be eine Optimistin.
    • einen is accusative, but after sein the noun stays in the nominative.
    • einem is dative, which nothing here calls for.
