C1 · Word order for emphasis

Ich habe lange gewartet auf diesen Moment.

moving a phrase past the verb bracket for weight

Form… Partizip / Infinitiv + Präpositionalgruppe (Nachfeld)

Meaning and usage

Normally everything sits inside the verb bracket: Ich habe lange auf diesen Moment gewartet. In speech, and more and more in writing, a prepositional phrase can be moved out past the participle or infinitive: Ich habe lange gewartet auf diesen Moment. This is Ausklammerung, and it puts weight on the phrase that was moved.

It also lightens a crowded bracket, so the listener reaches the verb sooner: Er hat sich gut geschlagen für einen Anfänger. In formal writing keep the neutral order unless you want the effect. A dass clause always goes after the bracket; for a phrase, it is a choice.

    Wir haben über die Reise.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: lange gesprochen

Wir haben lange gesprochen über die Reise: the bracket haben … gesprochen is closed, and über die Reise is placed after it. The neutral order keeps it inside: Wir haben lange über die Reise gesprochen.

    • lange gesprochen haben haben already stands in second position; it cannot appear twice.
    • gesprochen lange Only the participle closes the bracket; the adverb lange stays inside it.
    • lange sprechen The perfect needs the participle gesprochen, not the infinitive.
