während / wohingegen (Gegensatz)
während, wohingegen: whereas, comparing two sides
FormHauptsatz, während / wohingegen + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)
Meaning and usage
während does not only mean while in time. It also means whereas, setting two things side by side: Tom duscht lieber am Morgen, während Maria lieber vor dem Zubettgehen badet. The contrast reading is clear when two different subjects are compared on the same point and the time does not matter.
wohingegen means the same and is only ever a contrast, so it leaves no doubt: Mein Bruder liebt Hunde, wohingegen ich lieber Katzen habe. Both send the verb to the end. wohingegen is formal; in speech people say aber, or put dagegen in a main clause: Ich dagegen habe lieber Katzen.

Correct answer: während
The sentence sets two people side by side: she speaks Spanish, I don't understand a word. That is während meaning whereas, with the verb at the end.
- nachdem is about the order of events, which does not fit.
- weshalb means which is why, but her Spanish is not the reason I understand nothing.
- sodass gives a result, which does not fit.
