die: -schaft, -tät, -ion, -ik, -ur

feminine endings: -schaft, -tät, -ion, -ik, -ur

Formdie + Nomen auf -schaft, -tät, -ion, -ik, -ur, -enz, -anz

Meaning and usage

Besides -ung, -heit and -keit, a few more endings mark a noun as feminine: -schaft (die Mannschaft), -tät (die Universität), -ion (die Lektion), -ik (die Musik), -ur (die Kultur), -enz (die Konferenz), -anz (die Distanz). Their plural is -en: die Lektionen, die Universitäten.

Many are international words, so the ending tells you the article even for a word you have never seen: die Identität, die Explosion, die Kritik. A few words that only happen to end in these letters differ: der Spion, das Abitur. The longer endings, -schaft, -tät and -ion, are the safest.
