das auf dem Sofa schlafende Kind

a participle phrase before the noun: the noun does it

FormArtikel + (Ort, Zeit …) + Partizip I (-end) + Endung + Nomen

Meaning and usage

The same frame works with Partizip I, the -end form. Then the noun is doing the action, at the same time: das auf dem Sofa schlafende Kind is the child sleeping on the sofa, die in der Stadt fahrenden Autos are the cars driving in the city. Unpacked, it is an active relative clause in the present: das Kind, das auf dem Sofa schläft.

Partizip I is the infinitive + -d: schlafen → schlafend, passen → passend. Before a noun it takes an adjective ending like any other adjective: ein lang zurückliegendes Erlebnis, einen zu diesem Nagellack passenden Lippenstift. Compare Partizip II, where something was done to the noun: das gelesene Buch.

    Correct answer: im Garten spielenden

The children are doing the playing, so Partizip I: die im Garten spielenden Kinder means die Kinder, die im Garten spielten. After die in the plural the ending is -en.

    • im Garten gespielten gespielten is Partizip II: it would mean the children had been played, which makes no sense.
    • im Garten spielende After die in the plural the ending is -en, not -e.
    • spielenden im Garten The participle must stand right before the noun, so im Garten goes in front of it.
