C1 · Participial clauses

abgesehen von, verglichen mit

apart from, compared with: participles as prepositions

Formabgesehen von + Dativ | verglichen mit + Dativ

Meaning and usage

Two participles work like prepositions, both with the dative: abgesehen von (apart from) and verglichen mit (compared with). Abgesehen von ein paar Fehlern, ist das ein gutes Buch. Verglichen mit seinem Bruder ist er nicht so intelligent. For a whole idea, von becomes davon: abgesehen davon (apart from that).

The phrase can open the sentence and then counts as the first element, so the verb comes next, with or without a comma. It can also come at the end, after a comma: Ihr Aufsatz ist sehr gut, abgesehen von zwei oder drei Rechtschreibfehlern. abgesehen can also follow its noun: von ein paar Fehlern abgesehen.

    Correct answer: Abgesehen

Abgesehen vom Wetter = apart from the weather. The phrase opens the sentence as the first element, so war follows.

    • verglichen takes mit, not von, and would mean compared with.
    • gesehen alone does not form a phrase with von meaning apart from.
    • angesehen means looked at or respected; it does not mean apart from.
