Meaning and usage
insofern … als limits a statement to one respect: in that, to the extent that. Er hat insofern recht, als die Zahlen tatsächlich gestiegen sind: he is right, but only in this respect. insofern usually sits inside the main clause, and als opens the clause after the comma, with the verb at the end. The two can also stand together: …, insofern als die Zahlen gestiegen sind.
On its own, insofern means in that respect, or so, and refers back to what was said: Insofern hat sich die Reise doch gelohnt. Do not confuse it with sofern, which means provided that and sets a condition.
