Meaning and usage
zumal adds a reason that makes the main statement even more convincing: especially as, all the more so because. Er hätte das wissen müssen, zumal er selbst Arzt ist: he should have known anyway, and being a doctor makes it stronger. The verb goes to the end, as after weil.
Use it when the statement already stands and the reason supports it; for the plain main reason, weil or da is the right word. zumal also works as an adverb before a phrase: Die Straße ist gefährlich, zumal im Winter (especially in winter). It belongs to written and argumentative German.
