Meaning and usage
dadurch, dass gives the means, like indem, but it is heavier and puts the stress on the how: Ich habe viel dadurch gelernt, dass ich Tom zugesehen habe. dadurch can sit in the main clause, with dass opening the clause after the comma, or both can stand together at the front: Dadurch, dass wir früher losgefahren sind, haben wir den Stau vermieden.
Unlike indem, it can also give a cause that is no one's deliberate action: Die meisten Differenzen in der Ehe entstehen dadurch, dass … So dadurch, dass works where indem would sound odd, after verbs like entstehen or verursacht werden.
