zu …, als dass …

zu …, als dass: too … for something to happen

Formzu + Adjektiv, als dass + Subjekt … Konjunktiv II (Ende)

Meaning and usage

zu …, als dass says something is too much for a result to be possible: Dieses Hemd ist zu klein, als dass ich es anziehen könnte (too small for me to wear). Es ist zu spät, als dass ich noch etwas ändern könnte. The als dass clause has its own subject and the verb at the end.

Its verb is usually Konjunktiv II, because the result does not happen: könnte, wäre, and in the past hätte … können: Er lief zu schnell, als dass wir ihn hätten einholen können. When both halves have the same subject, the shorter zu …, um … zu is more usual: Er ist zu jung, um Auto zu fahren.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: als dass

After zu + adjective, a clause with its own subject takes als dass, and its verb is Konjunktiv II: könnte.

    • sodass gives a result that does happen, the opposite of what zu means here.
    • um dass um goes with a zu-infinitive, never with dass.
    • damit gives a purpose, which does not follow zu schwer.
