auf eine Frage antworten → eine Frage beantworten

be-: a prepositional object becomes a direct object

Formauf etwas antworten → etwas beantworten (Akkusativ)

Meaning and usage

The prefix be- usually turns a verb with a preposition into a verb with a direct object in the accusative. auf eine Frage antworten becomes eine Frage beantworten; über ein Problem sprechen becomes ein Problem besprechen; in ein Zimmer treten becomes ein Zimmer betreten; in einem Haus wohnen becomes ein Haus bewohnen.

The meaning hardly changes, but the grammar does: the be- verb takes its object without a preposition. So Ich beantworte die Frage or Ich antworte auf die Frage, but not a mix of the two. be- is inseparable, so the Partizip II has no ge-: beantwortet, besprochen.
