German Funktionsverbgefüge: in Anspruch nehmen, zur Verfügung stellen

C1 AdvancedFunktionsverbgefüge in German4 questions below

The ruleA functional verb contributes almost no meaning (the noun does the work), and the pairing is fixed, so the combination is learned as one item.

eine Entscheidung treffen means entscheiden. The verb treffen has nothing to do with meeting; it is a piece of grammatical scaffolding holding up the noun. These pairings are everywhere in formal, legal and business German, they cannot be worked out, and swapping in a synonym produces something that is not German.

The commonest ones

eine Entscheidung treffenentscheidento make a decision
in Anspruch nehmenbeanspruchento make use of, to claim
zur Verfügung stellenbereitstellento make available
zur Verfügung stehento be available
Rücksicht nehmen aufberücksichtigento take into consideration

zum Ausdruck bringenausdrückento express
Bezug nehmen aufsich beziehen aufto refer to
eine Rolle spielento play a part
Kritik üben ankritisierento criticise
in Betracht ziehenerwägento consider

Why German bothers

Three reasons, and they are the reason these cannot simply be replaced by the simple verb in good writing.

The pairing is fixed

The verb cannot be swapped for a synonym, and the article is often fixed too: sometimes absent, sometimes contracted, never free.

CorrectWrongWhy
eine Entscheidung treffeneine Entscheidung machenmachen is not the functional verb here
in Frage kommenin die Frage kommenThe article is fixed as absent
zur Verfügung stellenzu der Verfügung stellenThe contraction is obligatory
Kritik übenKritik machenüben is the only option

Where it goes wrong

Wir müssen eine Entscheidung machen.

Wir müssen eine Entscheidung treffen.

machen is the reflex for English make, and it is wrong in almost every Funktionsverbgefüge. The functional verb is part of the fixed expression and has to be learned with the noun: treffen here, üben with Kritik, nehmen with Rücksicht.

Common questions

What is a Funktionsverbgefüge?

A fixed combination of a noun and a semantically light verb, where the noun carries the meaning: eine Entscheidung treffen, zur Verfügung stellen, in Kraft treten. The verb cannot be replaced by a synonym, so the whole unit is learned as one item.

Why not just use the simple verb?

Register, modification and aspect. The compound form is more formal, it lets you attach an adjective to the noun (eine schwierige Entscheidung treffen), and some pairs mark a distinction the simple verb cannot: zur Verfügung stellen against zur Verfügung stehen.

Why is 'eine Entscheidung machen' wrong?

Because the functional verb for Entscheidung is treffen, not machen. English 'make a decision' invites the wrong verb, and machen is the single most common source of error in this area: Kritik üben, Rücksicht nehmen, Bezug nehmen all take their own fixed verb.
