aufgrund, infolge, angesichts + Genitiv
aufgrund, infolge, angesichts: formal because of
Formaufgrund / infolge / angesichts + Genitiv | aufgrund von + Dativ
Meaning and usage
Formal German replaces a weil clause with a noun phrase after a preposition that takes the genitive: aufgrund (because of, on the basis of), infolge (as a result of), angesichts (in view of). Aufgrund des Sturmes ist der Strom ausgefallen says what Der Strom ist ausgefallen, weil es gestürmt hat says, in the register of a notice or a report.
Without an article, the adjective shows the genitive: aufgrund planmäßiger Wartungsarbeiten. Where nothing can show it, von + dative takes over: aufgrund von Verzögerungen, infolge von Umweltverschmutzung. In conversation these sound stiff; people say wegen or use a weil clause.
