hülfe, stürbe, stünde

old Konjunktiv II forms: hülfe, stürbe, stünde

FormKonjunktiv II mit anderem Vokal: helfen → hülfe, sterben → stürbe

Meaning and usage

Some strong verbs have an old Konjunktiv II whose vowel is not the one of the preterite: helfen (half) → hülfe, sterben (starb) → stürbe, stehen (stand) → stünde, schwimmen (schwamm) → schwömme, gewinnen (gewann) → gewönne or gewänne. Lieber stürbe ich, als zu tun, was du von mir verlangst.

You meet them in literature and in a few set phrases; stünde is still fairly common, the rest sound old or very formal. In speech and in most writing, use würde + infinitive: Ich würde gern helfen rather than Ich hülfe gern. Recognising them is enough.

    Correct answer: hülfe

An unreal condition needs Konjunktiv II in the result: the old form hülfe, or in modern German würde … helfen.

    • half is the preterite indicative and cannot express the unreal result.
    • hilf is the imperative.
    • helfe is the present or Konjunktiv I, not Konjunktiv II.
