Es war einmal ein König, der hatte drei Töchter.
fairy-tale style: Es war einmal …, der hatte …
FormEs war einmal + Person, der / die + Verb (2. Stelle) …
Meaning and usage
German fairy tales open with Es war einmal (once upon a time) and tell the story in the preterite. A new character is often followed by a clause with der or die and the verb in second place: Es war einmal ein Müller, der war arm, aber er hatte eine schöne Tochter. Es war einmal ein großer König, der lebte in Griechenland.
Here der is not a relative pronoun but a demonstrative, meaning he, so the clause is a main clause and the verb comes second. In ordinary German the same idea is a relative clause with the verb at the end: ein König, der in Griechenland lebte. Recognise the old order in tales and songs; write the modern one.
