Möge das neue Jahr Glück bringen!

möge: a wish (May …!) or a formal reported request

FormMöge + Subjekt + … + Infinitiv! | bat, er möge + Infinitiv

Meaning and usage

möge is the Konjunktiv I of mögen, and here it has nothing to do with liking. At the start of a sentence it expresses a wish, like English may: Möge dir das neue Jahr Glück bringen! It belongs to greetings cards, speeches and blessings.

In reported speech it passes on a request: Meine Mutter bat, ich möge mir den Bart abrasieren (asked me to shave off my beard). With dass the verb goes to the end: Sie bat ihn, dass er sie später anrufen möge. In everyday speech people use soll: Sie hat gesagt, ich soll mich rasieren.
