Ich bin gesessen. Er ist gestanden.

south: stehen, sitzen, liegen with sein in the perfect

FormSüden / Österreich / Schweiz: ist gestanden | Norden: hat gestanden

Meaning and usage

In southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, stehen, sitzen and liegen form the perfect with sein: Tom und Mary sind gemeinsam an der Bar gesessen, Wir sind eine Stunde an der Haltestelle gestanden. In the north and in most textbooks it is haben: Wir haben eine Stunde an der Haltestelle gestanden.

Both are standard German, and dictionaries list both. The choice tells you where the speaker or writer comes from, not how educated they are. Use the form of the region you live in, and recognise the other one without treating it as a mistake.

Mein Kollege aus München erzählt: „Ich gestern drei Stunden im Stau gestanden.“

    Show answer

    Correct answer: bin

The speaker is from Munich, where stehen takes sein in the perfect: Ich bin gestanden. In the north the same sentence has habe.

    • würde needs an infinitive, not a participle.
    • wurde + participle is the passive, and stehen has none.
    • werde + participle is not a German tense here.
