How do Germans live, and what are they really like?
Hallo! Wir sind Nina …
Hello! We're Nina...
… und David vom Deutschlandlabor.
...and David from the Germany Lab.
We answer questions about Germany and the Germans.
Heute geht es um das Thema „Musik“.
Today's topic is "music".
Machen viele Leute in Deutschland Musik?
Do many people in Germany make music?
Which instruments do they play, and where can you find good concerts?
Etwa 14 Millionen Deutsche machen regelmäßig Musik.
About 14 million Germans regularly make music.
Die meisten spielen ein Instrument,
Most of them play an instrument,
andere singen, zum Beispiel in einem Chor.
others sing, for example in a choir.
Etwa 75.000 Menschen in Deutschland
About 75,000 people in Germany
verdienen ihren Lebensunterhalt mit Musik.
earn their living with music.
Zwei Drittel der Berufsmusiker sind selbstständig.
Two thirds of professional musicians are self-employed.
Nina and David want to find out which instruments Germans play.
Spielst du ein Musikinstrument?
Do you play a musical instrument?
Ja, ich spiele Gitarre.
Yes, I play the guitar.
Ich hab mal Klavier gespielt.
I used to play the piano.
Ich, ne, gar nicht.
Me, no, not at all.
Blockflöte, Querflöte …
Recorder, transverse flute...
Schlagzeug und Trompete.
Drums and trumpet.
Gitarre.
Guitar.
Einmal Gitarre, das erst seit drei Jahren,
Guitar, which I've only been playing for three years,
und halt schon seit zwölf Jahren Klavier.
and piano for twelve years.
Blockflöte hab ich gelernt.
I learned the recorder.
Ich singe manchmal.
I sometimes sing.
Hier in Bonn, der Geburtsstadt von Beethoven,
Here in Bonn, Beethoven's birthplace,
the two of them are exactly right for the topic of "music".
The first instrument for Germans is often the recorder.
And the most popular instruments are the piano and the guitar.
Und die Stimme.
And the voice.
Viele Menschen in Deutschland singen gerne.
Many people in Germany love to sing.
That's true, and now we're at a music school
und schauen uns das mal an.
and are going to take a look.
Which instruments do people learn at the music school?
I think the most common instruments at the music school are piano,
gefolgt von Gitarre und Violine.
followed by guitar and violin.
Bei uns ist der Gesang ganz vorne.
For us, singing is right at the top.
Und warum?
And why?
Warum wollen so viele Leute singen?
Why do so many people want to sing?
Die Stimme ist einfach ein natürliches Instrument,
The voice is simply a natural instrument,
und da braucht man nichts für anschaffen,
and you don't need to buy anything for it,
you don't need to buy anything, and everyone can do it.
And what role do you think music plays for Germans?
I think music plays a very big role in Germany.
Unfortunately, it's just the case that nowadays many children
nicht mehr die Zeit dafür haben,
no longer have the time for it,
wie das früher der Fall war.
like they used to.
The teenagers in this band met at the music school
und schreiben auch eigene Lieder.
and also write their own songs.
Right now they're rehearsing for their first concert.
What does it feel like to make music?
Es befreit, und es macht einfach Spaß.
It's liberating, and it's just fun.
Freedom, and you can let go of everyday life and just switch off
und spielen und alles andere vergessen.
and play and forget everything else.
Es ist Zeit für ein Experiment.
It's time for an experiment.
Wie musikalisch sind die Deutschen?
How musical are the Germans?
Nina kann „Alle meine Entchen“,
Nina can play "Alle meine Entchen",
the best-known German children's song, on the recorder.
Wer kann es noch?
Who else can do it?
Nicht jeder.
Not everyone.
For some, recorder lessons must be quite a long time ago.
Also, ein Talent haben wir hier.
Well, we have a talent here.
Wo ist die Schlange?
Where's the snake?
But for some it still works quite well.
Zeit für ein richtiges Konzert:
Time for a real concert:
Heute Abend spielt eine Band in einem kleinen Club in Bonn.
Tonight a band is playing in a small club in Bonn.
Welche Art von Musik macht ihr?
What kind of music do you play?
Wir machen Ska, Reggae, Rocksteady.
We play ska, reggae, rocksteady.
Und schreibt eure Texte alle selber?
And do you write all your lyrics yourselves?
Yes, that's actually the main part of the music,
dass wir das selber machen.
that we do it ourselves.
Ich finde Covern nicht so interessant.
I don't find covering songs that interesting.
Und könnt ihr von der Musik leben?
And can you make a living from the music?
No, we can't, and we don't want to either.
Wir haben andere Berufe,
We have other jobs
that secure our income, and this is our hobby.
Das machen wir zum Spaß.
We do it for fun.
Musikmachen ist in Deutschland ein beliebtes Hobby.
Making music is a popular hobby in Germany.
Manche Leute spielen in Bands und geben Konzerte.
Some people play in bands and give concerts.
Viele Menschen in Deutschland lernen als Kind Blockflöte.
Many people in Germany learn the recorder as a child.
But as adults, they don't play so often anymore.
I think I can still play it pretty well.
