A1 · Present tense

gerade + Präsens

am doing something right now

FormPräsens + gerade (meist nach dem Verb)

Meaning and usage

gerade shows that an action is happening at this moment. German uses one present tense for both I read and I am reading, so Ich lese ein Buch can mean either. With gerade the meaning is clear: Ich lese gerade ein Buch means you are in the middle of it now. gerade usually stands right after the verb.

The same word has other meanings. As an adjective it means straight: eine gerade Straße. With the perfect it means a moment ago: Ich habe gerade gegessen. With the present tense it nearly always means right now.

    Correct answer: gerade

gerade fits the present tense spielt and the situation right now. The other time words do not match a scene that is happening at this moment.

    • seit needs a starting point and a stretch of time, not a single action now.
    • morgen points to the future, so it cannot describe what is happening at this moment.
    • gestern points to the past, but spielt is present tense.
