A1 · Modal verbs

möchte

would like, polite way to say what you want

Formmöchte (Position 2) … Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

möchte is the polite way to say what you want or to ask for something. It is the Konjunktiv II form of mögen, so it does not look like wollen at all. Use it for wishes, requests and plans: Ich möchte einen Kaffee, Wir möchten dich besuchen.

The verb möchte takes second position and the real verb goes to the very end in its basic form: Ich möchte nach Berlin fahren. The forms are ich möchte, du möchtest, er/sie/es möchte, wir möchten, ihr möchtet, sie/Sie möchten. The one mistake to avoid is putting the second verb in the middle or inflecting it: say Ich möchte kommen, not Ich möchte komme.

    Correct answer: möchte

The subject is ich, so the correct form is möchte. The infinitive gehen stands at the end of the sentence.

    • möchtet is the ihr form, so it does not match ich.
    • möchten is the wir and sie/Sie form, so it does not match ich.
    • möchtest is the du form, so it does not match ich.
