A1 · Present tense

sein: ich bin, du bist, er ist

to be: I am, you are, he is

Formsein (Position 2): ich bin, du bist, er/sie/es ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie/Sie sind

Meaning and usage

sein means to be. It is the most common German verb, and it is irregular, so the forms are worth learning by heart: ich bin, du bist, er ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie sind. The verb sits in position 2 in a statement, and the form changes with the subject.

Use sein to say who or what someone is, how someone is, where someone is, and with a time word it can also look to the future: Ich bin von Montag bis Donnerstag hier means I will be here from Monday to Thursday. The common mistake is using ich bin for every subject, so watch du bist and er ist.

    Correct answer: bist

The subject is du, so the correct form of sein is bist. The verb goes in position 2, right after Wo.

    • sind belongs with wir, sie or Sie, not with du.
    • ist belongs with er, sie or es, not with du.
    • bin belongs with ich, not with du.
