A1 · nicht and kein

nicht

not: the general negator

Formnicht + the word or phrase it negates, or … nicht near the end

Meaning and usage

nicht is the general word for not. It usually stands directly in front of the word or phrase it denies: Ich fahre nicht nach Berlin denies the destination, Der Film war nicht gut denies the adjective. When it denies the whole sentence, it stands near the end, after the other sentence parts: Ich kenne den Mann nicht.

Before a second verb part, a separable prefix or an adjective, nicht comes early: Ich habe ihn nicht gesehen, Ich rufe dich heute nicht an. A common mistake is to put nicht at the very end after the second verb part, as in Ich habe ihn gesehen nicht, which is not German.

    Correct answer: nicht

nicht denies the whole clause, and the weil clause gives the reason. kein cannot negate a verb, doch is not a negator here, and auch means also.

    • kein negates nouns that take ein or no article, and dich is a pronoun.
    • auch means also and does not negate.
    • doch is a modal particle or an answer to a negative question, not a plain negator here.
