FormVerb mit e im Stamm: du + Stamm mit i/ie, er/sie/es + Stamm mit i/ie
Meaning and usage
A small group of strong verbs changes its stem vowel in the present tense. The e becomes i or ie, but only in the du form and the er/sie/es form. The ich form, the wir form, the ihr form and the sie/Sie form keep the e. So sprechen goes: ich spreche, du sprichst, er spricht, wir sprechen, ihr sprecht, sie sprechen. Sehen goes: ich sehe, du siehst, er sieht, wir sehen, ihr seht, sie sehen.
Common verbs with this change are sprechen, sehen, lesen, geben, nehmen, essen, treffen, helfen, vergessen and empfehlen. Many other verbs with e do not change at all, for example gehen, stehen, leben and lernen. Learners often use the unchanged e in the du and er forms, saying du sprechst or er seht, which is not German.
