Formnicht müssen = no obligation; nicht dürfen = prohibition
Meaning and usage
Use nicht müssen when there is no obligation: Du musst nicht kommen means you are free to stay away. Use nicht dürfen when something is forbidden: Du darfst nicht kommen means you are not allowed to come. The infinitive goes to the end, and nicht stands before what it negates.
English speakers often use nicht müssen for a ban, because English must not sounds like it. But Du musst nicht rauchen means you do not have to smoke. For a ban, use nicht dürfen: Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.
