A1 · Present tense

haben: ich habe, du hast, er hat

to have: ich habe, du hast, er/sie/es hat

FormPronomen (ich/du/er/sie/es) + haben-Form: habe / hast / hat

Meaning and usage

haben means to have and is one of the most common German verbs. The forms for the singular are ich habe, du hast, er hat, sie hat and es hat. The verb sits in position 2 in a statement: Ich habe einen Bruder. For a yes/no question it moves to position 1: Hast du einen Bruder?

Use it for what you own, for family, for time and for many fixed phrases like Hunger haben or Angst haben. Learners often say ich habe for every person, but du needs hast and er, sie and es need hat. Note that lowercase sie hat means she has, while capitalized Sie haben is formal you have.

    Correct answer: hat

The subject is Meine Schwester, which is the same as sie, so the verb form is hat. habe goes with ich, hast with du, and haben with wir, sie (plural) and Sie.

    • hast belongs with du, not with meine Schwester.
    • habe belongs with ich, not with meine Schwester.
    • haben belongs with plural subjects or with formal Sie, not with one sister.
