A1 · Present tense

ich mache, du machst, er macht

regular present tense endings: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en

FormVerb stem + -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en

Meaning and usage

The present tense in German covers both simple and continuous meanings in English: Ich wohne hier can mean I live here or I am living here. The verb is formed by adding an ending to the stem: ich + stem + -e, du + stem + -st, er/sie/es + stem + -t, wir + stem + -en, ihr + stem + -t, sie/Sie + stem + -en. For example, machen has the stem mach-, giving ich mache, du machst, er macht, wir machen, ihr macht, sie machen.

Use this pattern with regular weak verbs. A common mistake is to use the infinitive for all persons, for example saying du machen instead of du machst, or to forget the -t in the third person singular, saying er machen instead of er macht.
