FormVerb mit a oder au → du/er/sie/es mit ä oder äu
Meaning and usage
Some verbs change their stem vowel in the present tense, but only in the du form and the er/sie/es form. An a becomes ä, and an au becomes äu. The ich form, the wir form and the sie plural form keep the original vowel.
For example fahren becomes du fährst and er fährt, and laufen becomes du läufst and sie läuft. The endings stay the same as usual. The mistake to avoid is changing the vowel in the ich form or the plural forms: say ich fahre and wir fahren, not ich fähre with an umlaut.

Correct answer: fährt
The verb fahren has an a in the stem, and with er the a becomes ä. The correct form is er fährt.
- fahre The vowel a stays unchanged and the ending e belongs to ich, not er.
- fahrt The vowel a stays unchanged, but er needs the umlaut form ä.
- fährst The umlaut is present, but the ending st belongs to du, not er.
