A1 · Present tense

seit + Präsens

started in the past, still true now

Formseit + Dativ (Zeitpunkt oder Zeitdauer) + Präsens

Meaning and usage

German uses the present tense with seit for something that started in the past and is still going on. English often uses the present perfect here: Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier means 'I have been living here for three years'. The time phrase can be a point in time (seit letztem Monat) or a length of time (seit drei Jahren).

The verb stays in the present tense because the situation is still going on. English speakers often copy the English form and say Ich habe seit drei Jahren hier gewohnt when they still live there. For something that is still true, German uses the present: Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier.

    Correct answer: seit

seit with the present tense lerne shows that the learning started two years ago and is still going on. The other prepositions do not fit this meaning with the present tense.

    • für + a length of time names a planned period, as in Ich fahre für zwei Wochen nach Spanien, not a time that started in the past.
    • vor + Zeitdauer refers to a completed action in the past, for example Ich habe vor zwei Jahren angefangen, and does not fit with the present tense here.
    • ab marks a starting point, usually in the future, as in ab Montag. It does not go with a length of time like zwei Jahren.
