FormStamm auf -t/-d + -est; Stamm auf s-Laut + -t
Meaning and usage
Most verbs add -st to the stem for du: du machst, du lernst. Two groups need a small change. If the stem ends in -t or -d, you link an -e- before the ending: du arbeitest, du findest, du wartest. Without this -e- the two consonants would be hard to say.
If the stem ends in an s-sound, written s, ss, ß, z or x, the du ending is only -t: du heißt, du reist, du tanzt. The s-sound is already there, so no second s is added. A common mistake is to write du heißst or du tanzst.

Correct answer: redest
The subject is du, so the ending is -st. The stem red- ends in -d, so a linking -e- comes before it: du redest.
- rede This is the form for ich.
- redst Without the linking -e- the d and the st cannot be said together.
- redet This is the form for er, sie, es or ihr, not for du.
