FormWas für ein + Nomen (Kasus nach dem Satz)
Meaning and usage
Was für ein asks about the kind or type of something. The question word was comes first, then für, then ein with the noun. The form of ein follows the case the noun needs in the sentence, not the word für: Was für ein Auto hast du? (accusative neuter), Was für eine Schule ist das? (nominative feminine), In was für einem Haus wohnst du? (dative neuter).
Use it when you want to know the type, not the identity. The common mistake is to keep ein unchanged after für. Learn the four forms ein, eine, einen, einem and the dative feminine einer, and choose by the noun's role in the sentence.
